Lisa Marie PresleySinger/songwriter Lisa Marie Presley, the only child of Elvis Presley, died in the early evening of Jan. 12 in a Los Angeles hospital after suffering full cardiac arrest earlier in the day. She was 54. Lisa Marie's mother, Priscilla Presley asked fans to "keep her and our family in your prayers" in a social media message on Jan. 12 before confirming she had passed away in a subsequent message: "It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us. She was the most passionate, strong and loving woman I have ever known." A spokesperson for the LAPD said police were called to Presley's home in Calabasas, Calif., about 50 kilometres northwest of downtown Los Angeles, in the morning of Jan. 12 and found paramedics working on Presley who was experiencing cardiac arrest. The spokesperson confirmed that paramedics performed CPR on Presley and were able to help her regain a pulse before she was taken to a nearby hospital, where she flatlined several times and was eventually pronounced dead. Lisa Marie's health emergency came just two days after she attended the Golden Globe Awards to watch Austin Butler win the award for Best Performance in a Motion Picture (Drama) for his role in director Baz Luhrmann's ELVIS biopic, and appeared "unsteady" during interviews on the red carpet. Just days before that, she was in Memphis, Tenn., at Graceland -- the mansion where Elvis lived -- to celebrate what would have been her father's 88th birthday on Jan. 8. Presley released three rock albums in the 2000s and appeared on stage with artists like Pat Benatar and Richard Hawley during her musical career. She also formed direct musical ties with her father, joining her voice to such Elvis recordings as "Don't Cry Daddy," a mournful ballad which had reminded him of the early death of his mother -- and Lisa Marie's grandmother -- Gladys Presley. Lisa Marie PresleyBorn on Feb. 1, 1968, Lisa Marie was nine years old when Elvis died at the age of 42 in August 1977, and she became the sole heir of the Elvis Presley Trust. Along with Elvis Presley Enterprises, the trust managed Graceland and other assets until she sold her majority interest in 2005. She retained ownership of Graceland Mansion itself, the 13 acres around it and the Elvis memorabilia items inside the home. Her son is buried there, along with her father and other members of the Presley family. Lisa Marie and Priscilla would often make regular trips to Graceland during huge fan celebrations on the anniversaries of Elvis's death and birthday. One of the two airplanes at Graceland is also named Lisa Marie. She would later make headlines of her own through struggles with drugs and some very public marriages. Her four husbands included pop superstar Michael Jackson and actor Nicolas Cage. She also became involved in numerous humanitarian causes, from anti-poverty programs administered through the Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation to relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina. She would receive formal citations from New Orleans and Memphis for her work. Presley had recently penned an essay published in People magazine about "the horrific reality" of her grief following her son Benjamin Keough's death by suicide in 2020. "I've dealt with death, grief and loss since the age of 9 years old. I've had more than anyone's fair share of it in my lifetime and somehow, I've made it this far," she wrote in August. Presley is also the mother of actress Riley Keough, 33, and twin 14-year-old daughters Harper and Finley, whose father is Lisa Marie's fourth husband, Michael Lockwood. A spokesman for the Presley family said Lisa Marie will be buried at the Graceland mansion alongside her father, son, and other members of the Presley family. - AP, 1/13/22.

Jeff BeckJeff Beck, a former member of the Yardbirds and founder of the Jeff Beck Group who is hailed as one of the most influential guitarists of all time, died on Jan. 10 after contracting bacterial meningitis. He was 78 years old. The news of his death was confirmed in a statement released by his family the following day. "It is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck's passing," the statement reads. "After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he peacefully passed away yesterday. His family ask for privacy while they process this tremendous loss," the statement added. One of the most influential lead guitarists in rock, Beck helped shape several genres including blues rock, psychedelia and heavy metal, and only the likes of Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix can truly be said to have surpassed him for imagination, excitement, technique and sheer power. Born in Surrey, England on June 24, 1944, Beck attended Wimbledon Art College in London and backed Lord Sutch before replacing Eric Clapton in the Yardbirds. He established himself with a two-year stint with that band, but left in late 1966. The next year he had a U.K. solo hit single with the out-of-character "Hi Ho Silver Lining" (reissued and a hit the second time around in 1972). He followed that with the even more bizarre "Love Is Blue," played deliberately out of tune because he hated the song. Later in 1967 he formed the Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart on vocals, Ronnie Wood on bass, Mickey Waller on drums, and later Nicky Hopkins on piano. The Jeff Beck Group's reworkings of blues-based material laid the groundwork for Seventies heavy metal, and they enhanced their already considerable reputation with a series of rowdy, outrageous gigs -- mostly in the U.S. -- and two patchily excellent albums, Truth (1968) and Beck-Ola (1969). The teaming of Beck and Stewart was like nothing heard in rock before -- even if privately the two were frequently at each others' throats -- until Jimmy Page squared off to Robert Plant in Led Zeppelin. Jeff BeckClashing temperaments broke up the JBG in 1969, with Wood and Stewart joining the Faces. Beck made attempts to form a new band with Vanilla Fudge members Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice, but the project fell through when he was injured in a car crash which fractured his skull and kept him sidelined for 18 months. In 1971, he assembled a new Jeff Beck Group and released two albums of Memphis funk laced with heavy metal. In late 1972, Beck and Bogert and Appice -- the latter two who had been playing with Cactus -- formed Beck, Bogert and Appice, but weak vocals hampered the band, and it broke up in 1974. Beck went into another period of hibernation but reemerged in 1975 in an all-instrumental format, playing jazzy tunes, on such successful albums as Blow By Blow and Wired. During the late '70s he reportedly spent most of his time on his 70-acre estate outside London, and worked wih former Mahavishnu Orchestra keyboardist Jan Hammer on the 1980 album There and Back. In 1981, he appeared at Amnesty International's Secret Policeman's Ball, and in 1985 toured Japan, but his live performances became less and less frequent. In 1985 he released Flash, which included his sole charting single, a cover of Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready" (#48), with Stewart on vocals, and the Grammy-winning "Escape" written by Hammer, peaked at #39. Jeff BeckThrough the Eighties he turned up on recordings by such artists as Mick Jagger, Malcolm McLaren and Roger Waters. Over the course of his career, Beck won eight Grammys out of 17 total nominations and was inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice -- as a member of the Yardbirds in 1992 and as a solo performer in 2009. His last and most recent of his 11 solo LPs was 18, a collaborative full-length set with actor/musician Johnny Depp in July 2022. Posting on Instagram, Rod Stewart remembered Beck as "the greatest, my man" who was "on another planet." Posting a picture of the pair together, Stewart writes that Beck "took me and Ronnie Wood to the USA in the late 60s in his band the Jeff Beck Group and we haven't looked back since. He was one of the few guitarists that when playing live would actually listen to me sing and respond. Jeff, you were the greatest, my man. Thank you for everything. RIP." Others who flocked to social media to remember the guitar great include Ronnie Wood, Gene Simmons, Jimmy Page, Dave Davies, Paul Stanley, Toni Iommi, Mick Jagger, Stevie Van Zant, David Gilmour, Donny Osmond, Joe Perry, Billy Gibbons, Brian Wilson, Sammy Hagar, Ozzy Osbourne, and Experience Hendrix. - Billboard/The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock, 1/12/23.

Already honored by the Guinness Book of World Records for such accomplishments as "Most decades with a top 20 hit on the U.S. Hot Country Songs" (6) and "Most No. 1 hits on the U.S. Hot Country Songs chart by a female artist" (25), Dolly Parton added three more Guinness accolades to her record during a recent presentation. She now holds the record for "Most studio albums released by a female country singer" (65, from 1967 through 2022); Most top 10 entries on the Top Country Albums chart as a female artist" (48 entries), and "Female artist with the longest span of No. 1 hits on the Top Country Albums chart" (43 years, 156 days). Celebrating the longevity and success of Dolly Parton's remarkable career with three more Guinness World Records titles was incredible," said Michael Empric of Guinness via a statement. "Dolly isn't just a legend ... she is officially amazing!" adjudicator Michael Empric said via a statement." "I am humbled every time I receive a new Guinness World Records title. I share these three new honors with my fans, who have allowed me to enjoy such a long career," Dolly responded in her own statement. With the addition of the latest three accolades, Parton now has a total of 10 Guinness world records. - Billboard, 5/31/23...... QueenA spokesperson for Disney Music Group is denying reports that the corporation is considering selling Queen's music catalog for $1 billion, which would easily surpass the current record of $500 million paid for the purchase of Bruce Springsteen's catalogue in 2021. Earlier, an industry source familiar with the alleged music acquisition told CNN that discussions are "well underway" for Universal Music Group to acquire the legendary band's entire back catalog from DMG. CNN reported that Queen's sale figure would be so high because the band received a resurgence in popularity following the release of the 2018 biopic Bohemian Rhapsody which told the story of the band's inception with a focus on late frontman Freddie Mercury. Guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, who co-founded the band along with Mercury, continue to perform as Queen with Adam Lambert as their lead vocalist. Meanwhile, a new exhibition capturing the history of Queen through May's own stereoscopic (3-D) camera lenses are being shared for the first time to the public in an extensive exhibition. From an early age, Brian travelled with a 3-D camera in hand, so on Queen tours and during recordings he was able to capture rare behind-the-scenes moments of the legendary art-rock band. Some of the pictures were taken on stage; others behind the scenes, including informal shots taken on the road and during leisure time, giving close-up glimpses of the band as never seen before. The exhibition also includes stereoscopic photos taken by fans of modern day Queen with its lead vocalist Adam Lambert, and captures the wonders of the recent hit Queen musical "We Will Rock You." "Queen Will Rock You in 3-D" will be brought to life in three dimension with an ingenious OWL Stereoscopic Viewer designed by Brian himself. Curated by Proud Galleries and May, it runs in London from June 2 through Sept. 23. A companion book by May is also available at Proud Galleries. Queen + Adam Lambert kicks off a U.S. tour on Oct. 5 in Baltimore and runs through Nov. 12 in Los Angeles. - Music-News.com, 5/31/23...... In a new interview with BBC London, Elton John confessed he is "a little intimidated" by England's legendary Glastonbury music festival. Sir Elton, 76, is set to headline the world-famous music festival for the first time in his six-decade-spanning career on June 2, and says he has no idea what to expect when he steps out on the Pyramid Stage at Worthy Farm in Somerset. "I'm a little, not frightened, but I'm a little intimidated by it because I haven't played there, I haven't been there," John told BBC Radio 2. "It's the first time I've been asked... it's come at the right time, I'm a great believer in serendipity and fate and it's the most wonderful way to sign off in England," the "Tiny Dancer" singer added. John says concertgoers can expect mystery guests during his headline set. "I've got guests and I can't tell you who they are," he said. His most recent collaborations include the likes of Dua Lipa, Miley Cyrus and Stevie Nicks. Elton -- who has children Zachary, 11, and Elijah, nine, with his husband and manager David Furnish -- says he has no set plans after his "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour ends. "Everything is up in the air... boys go back to school... piano won't go away forever... it'll be very sporadic, I really don't want to tour again... I'm not going back to Vegas." - Music-News.com, 5/31/23...... Jeff BeckEric Clapton, Aerosmith's Joe Perry, Metallica's Kirk Hammett, ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons, Rod Stewart and Johnny Depp were among the musicians who came together to pay tribute to the late Jeff Beck at two special concerts held at London's Royal Albert Hall on May 22 and 23. The musicians performed material and covers that Beck himself played throughout his lifetime. Among the highlights were a cover of John Lennon's "Isolation" performed by Hammett, Depp and Gibbons, in tribute to Beck and Depp's take on the song that was released in 2022. In addition, Stewart played a four-song medley with Clapton, and Gibbons and Depp took on ZZ Top's "Rough Boy," a song Beck and Gibbons used to play together. Clapton also played an extended set on both nights which featured some of Beck's originals like "Beck's Bolero," as well as songs from their time in the Yardbirds and blues standards by Buddy Guy and Muddy Waters. Other notable performers across the two nights included Ronnie Wood, John McLaughlin, Derek Trucks and members of the Jeff Beck Band: Rhonda Smith, Anika Nillesand Robert Stevenson. Fan-filmed footage of the shows has been shared on YouTube. Beck rose to fame with the Yardbirds, whom he joined in 1965, replacing Clapton in the band's line-up. The two musicians went on to tour together as soloists in their later years. Clapton paid tribute to Beck on social media in the wake of the guitarist's death earlier in 2023. "'Always and ever'," he captioned a photograph of the late artist. - New Musical Express, 5/29/23...... Bruce Springsteen is taking in stride a recent onstage accident during a concert in Amsterdam when he took a tumble as he and the E Street Band launched into their 2020 hit "Ghosts." In a clip that has been uploaded to Twitter, TikTok and other social media (generating more than 10,000 comments), the Boss was filmed tripping and falling as he walked up a small set of steps onstage. But the 73-year-old "Born to Run" singer was all smiles after the mishap, quickly springing back up with a grin as his bandmates rushed to his aid. "Good night everybody!" he joked, before launching into another song. Springsteen's current world tour is seeing the rocker play to European crowds until the end of July. In August, he returns to North America for eight dates across Canada -- including two nights at Toronto's Scotiabank Arena -- this November. New Musical Express, 5/31/23...... Organizers of the ABBA Voyage virtual concert series have marked the one-year anniversary of the production on May 25 by releasing new production images from Voyage. The show, which takes place at a purpose-built venue in London's Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and has welcomed more than one million fans since it launched in 2022, sees the Swedish pop outfit perform their many hits as digital avatars. The show has been critically acclaimed, and described as a "feel-good sensory overload" where "digital sorcery meets pure pop bangers." The ABBA Voyage virtual concert series is currently set to run in London into May 2024, with plans reported for the experience to be taken on a world tour. - NME, 5/26/23...... Rod StewartRod Stewart has backed out of a potential catalog sale to Hipgnosis after two years worth of negotiations with the company after he reportedly decided that it "was not the right company." On May 29, Stewart released a statement saying he wanted to retain ownership of his catalog, which "represents my life's work." "And it's become abundantly clear after much time and due diligence that this was not the right company to manage my song catalog, career or legacy." Further details about the potential catalog sale are not known, including whether Stewart intended to sell his full catalog or just a smaller piece or royalty stream. Neither Hipgnosis nor Stewart's team would comment further when asked for specifics. Two music asset buyers independently noted to Billboard that Stewart's public statement might be a "great way to drum up business for the catalog" and "to generate calls from potential suitors," but another source noted it seems that a star of this magnitude would not need to speak out publicly in order to gain the attention of other buyers. The Hipgnosis Songs Fund, which has amassed a catalog of over 65,000 songs and records, has struggled since last summer, with its share price declining by 27% from a year ago to 81.85 pence. - Billboard, 5/30/23...... As is normal when an artist of the stature of Tina Turner dies, the legendary performer is on the verge of landing four album titles in the U.K.'s national albums chart, led by her The Platinum Collection hits LP. Turner's career retrospective could crack the top 10 for the first time, reentering at No. 8 on the midweek chart, the Official Charts Company reports. The Platinum Collection originally peaked at No. 14 following its release in 2009. Another hits compilation, 1994's The Collected Recordings, is poised for a No. 12 return, while the singer's Private Dancer set from 1984, one of the greatest comebacks of the 20th century, could vault to No. 31, having originally peaked at No. 2. All will be revealed when the Official U.K. Albums Chart is published on June 2. During her lifetime, Turner landed nine top 10 albums in the U.K., including two No. 1's (Foreign Affair and the soundtrack to What's Love Got To Do With It). Turner died "of natural causes" according to her rep on May 24 after a long illness in her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland. - Billboard, 5/30/23...... A local musicians' union in New York City is objecting to the lack of a live band in former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne's upcoming Broadway show "Here Lies Love," calling it an "existential threat" to the art form. "Here Lies Love," originally conceived by Byrne 17 years ago, has played an Off-Broadway run, in addition other engagements. It has previously been performed to a pre-recorded track, since it was inspired by the karaoke genre and the use of "track acts" in a club, which allow audience members to keep dancing, according to a representative for the production. The disco-pop musical is based on a concept album by Byrne and Fatboy Slim and follows the story of Imelda Marcos, the former first lady of the Philippines. The Alex Timbers-directed musical is scheduled to begin previews at the Broadway Theatre on June 17. The theater has been completely remodeled to accommodate a dance floor and other immersive levels for audience members. The production has requested a "special situation" stipulation, which would allow the show to proceed with less than the required number of musicians. The union notes that while the show is almost entirely performed to a pre-recorded soundtrack, there is a moment where a handful of actors play instruments. "A show with no live music and just pre-recorded tracks is absolutely an existential threat to Broadway- and is a cultural threat to musical theater worldwide," said Local 802 president and Executive Director Tino Gagliardi. - Billboard, 5/30/23...... Tom WaitsTom Waits is reportedly "writing again" according to a new memoir by his longtime Irish music agent, Paul Charles. In his book, Adventures in Wonderland, Charles discusses his transition into being one of the most important agents in the music industry, as well as his time working with artists including Van Morrison, Dire Straits, The Kinks, U2 and more. In one section of the book Charles discusses his longtime relationship with Waits and includes a discussion of the last performance the troubadour did back in 2008 -- in a tent venue in Dublin named the Rat Cellar. "We all hope he will tour again," Charles writes. "After he did the three nights in the Rat Cellar, he went home. He enjoyed the tour a lot, and the idea was to start writing. He did a bit of recording, and then he basically got distracted by the movie world for a while. The news is that he's started writing again. We've all got our fingers crossed for another return visit." Waits released his last studio album, Bad As Me, in 2011 and, more recently, his 1973 debut album, Closing Time, celebrated its 50th anniversary with a new vinyl reissue. - NME, 5/24/23...... Several Jewish groups, politicians and an alliance of civil society groups gathered for a memorial ceremony and a protest rally against a concert by Roger Waters in Frankfurt, Germany on May 28. They accuse the Pink Floyd co-founder of antisemitism -- an allegation he denies. Waters has also drawn their ire for his support of the BDS movement, which calls for boycotts and sanctions against Israel. Frankfurt authorities had initially tried to prevent the concert taking place, but Waters successfully challenged the move in a local court. The concert is taking place in the city's Festhalle, where in Nov. 1938 more than 3,000 Jews were rounded up by the Nazis, beaten and abused, and later deported to concentration camps. "[Waters'] words and imagery spread Jew-hatred and are part of a trend: to normalize Israel-hatred under the protection of freedom of speech or art," Elio Adler, the head of the Jewish group WerteInitiative which supports the protest, said. Earlier in May, police in Berlin said they had opened an investigation of Waters on suspicion of incitement over a costume the musician wore when he performed in the German capital in May. - Billboard, 5/28/23...... Danny MastersonThat '70s Show star Danny Masterson was convicted of two counts of rape in a Los Angeles courtroom on May 31 and faces a 30 years to life sentence after a jury found him guilty on two of three counts of rape at his second trial, in which the Church of Scientology played a central role. The 47-year-old actor's wife, actress and model Bijou Phillips, gasped when the verdict was read and wept as he was taken into custody, while a group of family and friends who sat stone-faced behind him throughout both trials. The jury of seven women and five men reached the verdict after deliberating for seven days spread over two weeks. They could not reach a verdict on the third count, that alleged Masterson raped a longtime girlfriend. They had voted 8-4 in favor of conviction. Masterson will be held without bail until he is sentenced. No sentencing date has yet been set, but the judge told Masterson and his lawyers to return to court Aug. 4 for a hearing. "I am experiencing a complex array of emotions -- relief, exhaustion, strength, sadness -- knowing that my abuser, Danny Masterson, will face accountability for his criminal behavior," one of the women, whom Masterson knew as a fellow member of the church and was convicted of raping at his home in 2003, said in a statement. A second woman, a former girlfriend, whose count left the jury deadlocked, said in the statement: "While I'm encouraged that Danny Masterson will face some criminal punishment, I am devastated that he has dodged criminal accountability for his heinous conduct against me." A spokesperson for Masterson declined comment, but his attorneys will almost certainly appeal. After a deadlocked jury led to a mistrial in December, prosecutors retried Masterson, saying he forcibly raped three women in his Hollywood Hills home between 2001 and 2003. They told jurors he drugged the women's drinks so he could rape them. They said he used his prominence in the church -- where all three women were also members at the time -- to avoid consequences for decades. The two women whose testimony led to Masterson's conviction said that in 2003, he gave them drinks and that they then became woozy or passed out before he violently raped them. He knew both from social circles in the church. Masterson was not charged with any counts of drugging the victims, and there is no toxicology evidence to back up the assertion from the prosecution. His attorney asked for a mistrial over the issue's inclusion. The motion was denied, but the issue is likely to be a major factor in any potential appeal. The charges date to a period when Masterson was at the height of his fame, starring from 1998 until 2006 as Steven Hyde on Fox's That '70s Show -- the show that made stars of Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis and Topher Grace. Masterson had reunited with Kutcher on the 2016 Netflix comedy The Ranch, but was written off the show when an LAPD investigation was revealed in Dec. 2017. - AP, 5/31/23.

The lead single from Dolly Parton's upcoming rock-influenced album has soared to No. 1 on Billboard's Rock Digital Song Sales chart dated May 27. In the May 12-18 tracking week, "World on Fire" sold 6,000 downloads in the United States, according to Luminate. That's after it moved 1,000 downloads in its first day of release, May 11, sparking its No. 13 debut on the May 20-dated survey (reflecting sales May 5-11). At the time, it became Parton' s first appearance on a Billboard rock chart. "World on Fire" was also bolstered by Parton' s performance of it on the Academy of Country Music Awards late on May 11, with that live video uploaded to Parton' s YouTube page May 12. The track concurrently opens at No. 3 on the Country Digital Song Sales chart, Parton's best rank since her Kenny Rogers duet "Islands in the Stream" hit No. 2 in Apr. 2020 after Rogers' death. "World on Fire is the first taste of Dolly's new album Rockstar, which will drop Nov. 17. The 30-song set features a score of collaborators, including Joan Jett, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Steven Tyler and more. - Billboard, 5/25/23...... Roger WatersRoger Waters has shared a statement on social media in which he calls the recent controversy over his concert in Berlin, Germany a "smear" aiming to "silence" him. On May 26, police in the German capital announced they had opened an investigation of Waters on suspicion of incitement over a costume the Pink Floyd co-founder wore when he performed in the German capital earlier in May. Images on social media showed the musician firing an imitation machine gun while dressed in a long black coat with a red armband. The Berlin gig came after Waters provoked a backlash after he made reference to Anne Frank at one of his earlier concerts in Germany, in which he wore an outfit that some deemed as having connotations to the Second World War. This particular segment of the show revolved around a character from Pink Floyd's The Wall LP, who imagines himself as a fictional fascist dictator during a hallucination. When playing the character, Waters donned a black trench coat and wore a red armband featuring two crossed hammers. Police confirmed that an investigation was opened over suspicions that the context of the costume could constitute a "glorification, justification or approval of Nazi rule" and therefore a disturbance of the public peace. Once the police investigation is concluded, police said, the case will be handed to Berlin prosecutors, who would decide whether to pursue any charges. After a Berlin police spokesperson announced that "an investigation has been opened over the costume displayed at the concerts on 17 and 18 May," Waters shared a statement on his Twitter account on May 27 hitting back at the criticism and investigations. Discussing how the gigs had "attracted bad faith attacks from those who want to smear and silence me because they disagree with my political views," Waters said that anyone considering the gigs' message to be anything but anti-fascist is "disingenuous and politically motivated." He added: "The elements of my performance that have been questioned are quite clearly a statement in opposition to fascism, injustice, and bigotry in all its forms," he said. "The depiction of an unhinged fascist demagogue has been a feature of my shows since Pink Floyd's The Wall in 1980. I have spent my entire life speaking out against authoritarianism and oppression where I set it & My parents fought the Nazis in World War II, with my father paying the ultimate price. Regardless of the consequences of the attacks against me, I will continue to condemn injustice and all those who perpetrate it." The show was part of the ongoing leg of Waters' "This Is Not A Drill" farewell tour, and was one of the two shows that were originally cancelled in the country following controversy regarding comments which many viewed as anti-semitic. Both shows were initially cancelled by the municipal government due to the musician' s views on Israel, before the decision was overturned. - New Musical Express/AP, 5/27/23...... Tributes to Tina Turner are flowing in since the "Queen of Rock N' Roll" died on May 24 at her home in Switzerland after a long illness. Speaking to host Ari Melber on MSNBC's The Beat via phone a few hours after the news broke, Cher revealed that she and other friends of Tina's started paying visits to her recently "because I thought, 'I need to put this time into our friendship, so she knows we haven't forgotten her." "So we all took turns going and spending time with her and it made her happy." She noted that a friend said it was always a scene when they were together because they would crack each other up and laugh their "distinct" laughs. Cher said that Turner had "her dialysis machine in her house," hinting that the singer may have been employing the device typically used by people with kidney failure or end-stage renal disease. Turner was known to suffer from kidney issues and got a kidney transplant from her husband, Erwin Bach, in 2017. "She fought this sickness for such a long time and she was so strong as you think she would be, but I know towards the end, she told me once, she said, 'I'm really ready. I just don't want to put up with this anymore,'" said Cher, whose interview has been shared on MSNBC's Twitter page. Posting on Instagram, Mick Jagger said he was "so saddened by the passing of my wonderful friend Tina Turner," and captioned a series of photos of him performing with the late icon from decades past. "She was truly an enormously talented performer and singer. She was inspiring, warm, funny and generous. She helped me so much when I was young and I will never forget her." Turner's What's Love Got to Do with It doppelgänger, actress Angela Bassett, also took to Instagram to share a heartbreaking tribute to the musical icon. "How do we say farewell to a woman who owned her pain and trauma and used it as a means to help change the world?," Bassett wrote. "Through her courage in telling her story, her commitment to stay the course in her life, no matter the sacrifice, and her determination to carve out a space in rock and roll for herself and for others who look like her, Tina Turner showed others who lived in fear what a beautiful future filled with love, compassion, and freedom should look like," the actress added alongside a photo of the duo laughing. R&B icon Beyoncé posted a touching tribute to Tina on her Twitter account, paying her respects and thanking her for the ways that she shaped her as an artist: "My beloved queen. I love you endlessly. I'm so grateful for your inspiration, and all the ways you have paved the way. You are strength and resilience. You are the epitome of power and passion." Other tributes to Turner came from the likes of Blondie's Debbie Harry, Dolly Parton, Ronnie Wood, Bryan Adams, Ringo Starr, Jennifer Hudson, Nicki Minaj, Chaka Khan, former president Barack Obama, and Pres. Joe Biden. Meanwhile, the cause of death of the "Simply the Best" icon has been announced. On May 25 her representative said she had passed away from "natural causes," after previously only saying she had been battling a "long illness" without specifying a cause of death. Tina admitted two months before her death that she was in "great danger" due to her battle with kidney disease. Two years before her death she also revealed in the Tina feature-length documentary she had been dealing with a string of physical and mental health ailments for decades. She said she had been diagnosed with a form of post-traumatic stress disorder from the domestic abuse she suffered throughout her marriage with her first husband and music partner, Ike Turner, who died in 2007 aged 76. Tina added: "I had an abusive life, there's no other way to tell the story. It's a reality. It's a truth. That's what you've got, so you have to accept it." A spokesperson for Tina told the U.K. paper The Sun that Turner will be laid to rest at "a private funeral ceremony attended by close friends and family." Since her death, a flood of fans have gathered outside her $76 million home in Switzerland, with devotees leaving candles, flowers and messages around the 10-building waterfront estate in the municipality of Staefa, on the northern shores of Lake Zurich, where Tina died. - NME/Bang Showbiz, 5/25/23...... Stevie NicksStevie Nicks is paying tribute to the young victims whose lives were taken in the Robb Elementary School shooting, which took place exactly one year ago on May 24, 2022 in her home state of Texas. The Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter marked the Uvalde massacre's one-year anniversary with a heartfelt letter on Twitter titled "THE LOST FUTURES OF UVALDE." Reminiscing on growing up and discovering her passions for music and dance as a child in El Paso, Nicks mourned the fact that 19 fourth-graders from a city just a few hours away from her hometown will never get the chance to do the same following last spring' s tragedy, which remains one of the deadliest school shootings on record. "As we ponder the one-year anniversary of Uvalde, and the myriad of shootings that have happened since that fateful day, I can' t help but ask myself, what if I had been shot and killed by a man with a gun while in my ballet class in third grade?" she wrote. "And I can' t help but think of all those little lost futures." Since Uvalde, which resulted in a total of 21 deaths and 18 injuries, BBC News reports that at least 600 more mass shootings have taken place across the U.S. Texas, meanwhile, has moved to widen access to firearms in the last year. "My arms go around each one of those little hearts like a ring of angels that will always be missing," Nicks concluded her message. "I will never be able to let this go. If anything, I will do all I can to keep this story alive." The "Edge of Seventeen" singer also spoke out last year shortly after the shooting transpired, with a similar letter posted to her Twitter. "No one is trying to take away guns from people who get them for a good reason," she wrote at the time. "Guns are not toys. Background checks are not that hard." - Billboard, 5/24/23...... Interviewed by the British paper The Times, Paul Simon revealed that he's dealing with a ravage of time that is totally expected at his age of 81, but could seriously impact how he records and performs in the future. Simon said that he began to experience hearing loss in his left ear while recording his just-released continuous seven-song musical suite, Seven Psalms. "Quite suddenly, I lost most of the hearing in my left ear, and nobody has an explanation for it," he said. "So everything became more difficult." And while he described being frustrated and annoyed at first, Simon said he didn't get angry because, "I thought it would pass and it would repair itself." The quintessential New Yorker -- who now lives on a ranch in wife Edie Brickell's home state of Texas -- said his hearing has not yet returned, which means he may be unable to tour again. The only upside, according to the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, is that he may be spared playing songs from his catalog that he's grown weary of. "Sometimes there are songs that I like and then at a certain point in a tour, I' ll say, 'What the f are you doing, Paul?'" he told the paper. "The songs of mine that I don't want to sing live, I don't sing them," he said. "Quite often that would come during [1986 hit] 'You Can Call Me Al.' I' d think, 'What are you doing? You're like a Paul Simon cover band. You should get off the road, go home.'" Seven Psalms is the follow-up to his 2018 rarities collection, In the Blue Light. The album, intended to be listened to as an extended piece, is predominantly performed by Simon on unplugged instruments and also features British vocal ensemble VOCES8 as well as Brickell. - Billboard, 5/24/23...... ABBA have responded to rumours that they could be reuniting for the 50th anniversary of the Eurovision Song Contest in their native Sweden, which helped skyrocket the quartet to international fame. After latest victor Loreen won the competition with her song "Tattoo" earlier in May, rumour spread online that it was all part of a plan to have ABBA reform to mark 50 years of their own Eurovision win as the contest returns to their home country as the 2024 host nation. Now, they have shot down the chances of it happening -- even just for one evening. "I don't want to," Benny Andersson told the BBC, "and if I don't want to, the others won't. It's the same for all four of us -- someone says, 'no' -- it's a no." His bandmate Björn Ulvaeus added: "We can celebrate 50 years of ABBA without us being on stage." Ulvaeus also shot down the chances of the ABBA-tars appearing at the UK's Glastonbury festival too, telling New Musical Express: "I don't think that's possible, yet. It might be in the future. As it is, it's too complicated because the lighting, the sound, the visuals, everything is integrated and it's so complicated." The ABBA Voyage virtual concert series is currently set to run in London until the end of January 2024, with plans reported for the experience to be taken on a world tour. Asked about what the future of the show involves, Ulvaeus replied: "We hope to stay in this venue for as long as we can. We hope they'll have us for many years, and we might build other replicas of this in other places: Asia, Australia, North America. There are lots and promoters and cities that we're talking to at the moment about that." Meanwhile, ABBA's Anni-Frid Lyngstad told The Sun on May 25 that she struggles to grasp it isn't really her singing as an avatar. "It's hard to fully grasp that it isn't me and yet it is me. I can certainly see myself in the digital figure, the gestures, the facial expressions, the eyes that express all sorts of feelings. It's absurd but it's real," the 77-year-old singer said. - NME/Music-News.com, 5/25/23...... Maureen McCormickThe Studio City, Calif. home made famous by The Brady Bunch and decades later became the center of a high-profile bidding war in 2018 is on the market for $5.5 million, with a portion of proceeds from the sale benefitting a charity working to end childhood hunger in the U.S. The iconic home made famous by the beloved TV show about a blended family in the 1970s spans 5,140 sq. ft. across two floors with five bedrooms and five bathrooms. There's no mistaking the Brady home's floating staircase, burnt orange-and-avocado green kitchen, and Jack-n-Jill bathroom between the kids' bedrooms. It was in July 2018 when the house came up for sale for the first time in nearly a half-century and sparked a high-profile bidding war that involved singer Lance Bass of 'Nsync fame, but which home improvement cable channel HGTV ultimately won. The network paid $3.5 million for the property in Aug. 2018, 86% more than the initial $1.8 million asking price. At that time, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, who oversees HGTV, announced plans to "restore the Brady Bunch home to its 1970s glory." As part of the renovation, HGTV invested $1.9 million and added 2,000 square feet to the property's original footprint, including a second floor which the original home didn't have, which only fed into the Bradymania. More than 28 million viewers tuned in to the series A Very Brady Renovation to watch the actors who played the six Brady kids, including Maureen McCormick and Barry Williams, reunite and transform the home into a replica of the original set design. They returned later to the renovated house for a holiday special. "We did everything we dreamed of doing with the house and delighted a lot of Brady Bunch fans in the process, but it's time for us to let it be loved and enjoyed by someone else," HGTV said in a press release. A portion of the proceeds from the home sale will go to "Turn Up! Fight Hunger," a partnership between Warner Bros. Discovery and No Kid Hungry to end childhood hunger in the U.S. - Los Angeles Daily News, 5/24/23...... He's movin' out! The 20,000 sq. ft. main home features 5 bedrooms, 6.5 bathrooms, and six fireplaces. Charles "Chas" Newby, a bassist for the Beatles in their early days who filled in for then-bassist Stuart Sutcliffe for a number of live shows in 1960, has died of as yet undisclosed causes. He was 81. The news was first announced via The Cavern Club Liverpool's Facebook page -- where the Beatles rose to prominence -- on May 23, followed by Roag Best, the brother of former Beatles drummer Pete Best. The Cavern Club Liverpool wrote on Facebook: "It's with great sadness to hear about the passing of Chas Newby. Chas stepped in for The Beatles for a few dates when Stuart Sutcliffe stayed in Hamburg and latterly he played for The Quarrymen. Interestingly, he was also the first left-handed bass guitarist in The Beatles. RIP Chas Newby thoughts and well wishes from everybody at The Cavern Club." Roag Best wrote: "Both Pete and I and the whole Best family absolutely devasted to hear the very sad news with regards to one of the families closest friends Chas Newby passing last night. Many of you will know him for playing bass guitar for both The Beatles and The Quarrymen, but to us he was laid back Chas with the big smile. We'll truly miss him. Forever in our thoughts. God bless you Chas." Newby performed bass with the Beatles for a short span of live shows in late 1960, when then-bassist Stuart Sutcliffe was unable to perform with the band. Sutcliffe later resumed operations with the Beatles until his exit in July the following year. Newby was also the band's first left-handed bassist, followed by guitarist-turned-bassist Paul McCartney. Newby also played in the reformed The Quarrymen between 2016 and 2022. Since the news of his passing, Newby has received a handful of tributes including Beatles historian Mark Lewisohn, who wrote on Twitter: "RIP Chas Newby, fill-in Beatle and fair chap. He deputised for Stuart on a few dates when the Beatles returned from Hamburg the first time, end-1960, including the momentous Litherland date. Latterly he's been one of the Quarry Men too. A charming man, always a pleasure to meet." - NME, 5/24/23...... Rolf HarrisRolf Harris, a disgraced Australian entertainer who, prior to his downfall, enjoyed hits in the U.K., the U.S. ("Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" hit No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963) and his homeland, Australia -- and who was once commissioned to paint Queen Elizabeth II -- has died at the age of 93. Born March 30, 1930 in Perth, Australia, Harris' life and career will be remembered in two halves. At the peak of his celebrity, following a relocation to the U.K., Mr. Harris enjoyed A-list status on both sides of the globe, a star of TV and popular music, an enthusiast for the wobble board and didgeridoo who had a string of hit singles, and collaborations with The Wiggles and others. He enjoyed a string of U.K. chart hits including "Two Little Boys" (Columbia), which has the distinction of being the very last No. 1 in Britain in the 1960s. "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" reached No. 9 in Britain back in 1960, and he had a No. 3 hit with "Sun Arise" in 1962. He enjoyed another U.K. top 10 in 1993, when his cover of "Stairway to Heaven," a spin-off from the Australian TV show Money or the Gun, reached No. 7. The Guinness World Records book of British Hit Singles had summed-up Harris as a "lovable Australian musician, artist and presenter." Along the way, he was elevated into the highest circles, by being named as Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). His spectacular fall from grace began in 2013, when he was questioned and arrested police under Operation Yewtree, the investigation into sexual abuse among members of the English media elite, including the late Jimmy Savile. Following a trial in 2014, Mr. Harris was found guilty of various indecent assaults on women and young girls between 1968 and 1986, and was sentenced to five years and nine months in prison. He was released in 2017, but denied any wrongdoing and never issued an apology to his victims. According to the BBC, Harris passed May 10, and has already been buried, though details have been kept under lock and key until now. His death certificate, the Corporation reports, notes that he died from neck cancer and "frailty of old age" at his home in Bray, Berkshire. A statement from his family reads: "This is to confirm that Rolf Harris recently died peacefully surrounded by family and friends and has now been laid to rest. They ask that you respect their privacy. No further comment will be made." - Billboard, 5/23/23...... Former Earth, Wind & Fire member Sheldon Reynolds died on Mar. 23 at the age of 63. He went on to tour with singer Millie Jackson, and later joined Sun, recording three albums with the R&B act. In 1983, he joined The Commodores. During a four-year spell with the band, he performed on the 1985 LP Nightshift and the following year's album release United. He then joined EW&F as lead guitarist and co-vocalist, playing on the soul band' s LPs Touch The World (1987), Heritage (1990), Millennium (1993) and In The Name of Love (1997). The midtempo Millennium hit "Sunday Morning" earned a Grammy Award nomination in the category of best R&B vocal performance by a duo or group. Thanks in part to Reynolds' contributions, the band was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame's class of 2000, and earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, awarded in 1995. Reynolds went on to work on solo projects with Bailey and EW&F's late band leader Maurice White, who died in 2016. His passing closely follows the death of former EW&F drummer Fred White in January, at the age of 67. - Billboard, 5/26/23...... Ed AmesVeteran show business actor and singer Ed Ames, perhaps best known as Cherokee Indian Mingo on the Fess Parker 1960s NBC-TV vehicle, Daniel Boone, died on May 21 in Los Angeles. He was 95, and no cause of death was given. Mr. Ames began his career in the 1950s as part of the singing The Ames Brothers quartet, joining with his brothers Vic, Joe and Gene. The group had a hit with "Rag Mop" in 1950, and totaled 49 chart hits before ending their association in 1963. The group also had a syndicated TV program, The Ames Brothers Show. Mr. Ames also branched off into a solo career, hitting the charts with "My Cup Runneth Over," "Who Will Answer?" and "Try to Remember." He then switched gears and did stage tours in the off-Broadway shows "The Crucible" and "The Fantasticks," and then scored a starring role on Broadway in "Carnival!" He later starred with Kirk Douglas, Gene Wilder and William Daniels in the Broadway production of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." Then television came calling, and Mr. Ames -- though of Russian-Jewish heritage -- was tabbed to play a regular supporting role in Daniel Boone. During his TV career, he accidentally became a The Tonight Show legend when he demonstrated how to throw a tomahawk for host Johnny Carson. Aiming at a wood panel outline of a cowboy, Ames's throw landed squarely in the groin of the drawing. Carson quipped, "I didn't even know you were Jewish!" and then, "Welcome to Frontier Bris." The audience roared for a reported four minutes. Mr. Ames later made guest appearances in such shows as The Rifleman, McCloud, It's Garry Shandling's Show, Jake and the Fatman and Murder She Wrote. Mr. Ames was born in Massachusetts as the youngest of nine children, and received a B.A. in theater and cinema arts from UCLA in 1975. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne; two children, Ronald and Sonya; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and stepson Stephen Saviano. Another daughter, Marcella, predeceased him. - Deadline.com, 5/26/23.

Beck added that he learned from Clapton's former wife, Patti Boyd, that "there definitely was [rivalry]" between the two, "especially with the Stevie Wonder stuff. Nick LowePower pop artist Nick Lowe will release a new EP with Los Straightjackets entitled "Tokyo Bay/Crying Inside" this summer which will feature a cover of Dionne Warwick's 1982 Bee Gees-written (and produced) his "Heartbreaker." Lowe says his easygoing, laid-back version of "Heartbreaker" was a song he played during soundchecks on tour "...something we might play before the show. I always thought it was a really, really great song, and like a lot of Bee Gees songs it really has got sort of hidden depth. I'm a great fan of the Bee Gees; You don't necessarily know what they're singing about a lot of the time, but they just make this fantastic sound and a lot of their songs are really soulful when you strip them all back. And that song 'Heartbreaker' I always thought was a really soulful song. I just started doing it in the soundchecks and then the Straitjackets liked it. They said, 'Let's have a go at doing that' and it really turned out well, I thought." Lowe's new EP will drop June 15 via Yep Roc Records, a week before he kicks off a US summer tour with Los Straightjackets in Jersey City, N.J., on June 22. In more Rolling Stones news, it has been revealed that the name of the investigation into Pres. Donald Trump's alleged ties with Russia was inspired by the Stones track "Jumpin' Jack Flash." During the pre-election stages of the investigation, it was known as "Crossfire Hurricane" -- a lyric lifted from the band's 1969 classic. Now, The New York Times has confirmed that the code name was in fact a direct reference to the track. "[The lyric] was an apt prediction of a political storm that continues to tear shingles off the bureau," according to a report entitled "The Secret Origins of the Trump Investigation." An accompanying post also states that Keith Richards is to thank for the words. "In his book Keith Richards: The Biography, [author Victor] Bockris wrote that Mr. Richards was born amid the bombing and air raid sirens of Dartford, England, in 1943 at the height of World War II. 'I was born with those sirens,' he said." Now run by Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III, the investigation is no longer known by the Stones-inspired name. Meanwhile, in an interview with the BBC on May 16, Keith Richards revealed that he once "stuck a knife in a table" in order to "get rid of" private citizen Trump as the promoter of one of their shows. "He [Trump] was the promoter for us in Atlantic City," Richards said. "[It was billed as] 'Donald Trump presents The Rolling Stones' [with the band's name written in miniature]. I got out my trusty blade, stuck it in the table and said: 'You have to get rid of this man!'" Richards added that "now America has to get rid of him. Don't say I didn't warn you!" - New Musical Express, 5/16/18...... Freddie MercuryThe first trailer for the long-awaited Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody was released on May 15. The trailer then depicts Mercury's first meeting with guitarist Brian May (Gwilym Lee) and drummer Roger Taylor (Ben Hardy), and then to a scene in which Brian May plays the central "Rhapsody" riff in the studio and Mercury informs him from the mixing board "this is where the operatic section comes in." The potent 6% ABV beer will be available at most stops on their tour, as well as select bars and restaurants. "The best of British beer is the malt body and that beautiful malt balance. "So we've taken those two aspects, put them together and come up with a beer you can actually drink a few of -- 6% ABV you can drink all night long." The Def Leppard/Journey tour kicks off May 21 and runs through Oct. 7. - Billboard, 5/14/18...... "I think what you would say is that there were factions within the band that had lost their perspective. It harmed the 43-year legacy that we had worked so hard to build," he said of the group's decision, "and that legacy was really about rising above difficulties in order to fulfill one's higher truth and one's higher destiny." Buckingham refrained from commenting when one audience member yelled "F--- Stevie Nicks." Itzkoff shows how Williams's comic brilliance masked a deep well of conflicting emotions and self-doubt, which he drew upon in his comedy and in celebrated films like Dead Poets Society; Good Morning, Vietnam; The Fisher King; Aladdin; and Mrs. Doubtfire, where he showcased his limitless gift for improvisation to bring to life a wide range of characters. Itzkoff also shows how the former Mork & Mindy star struggled mightily with addiction and depression topics he discussed openly while performing and during interviews and with a debilitating condition at the end of his life that affected him in ways his fans never knew. - Macmillan.com, 5/15/18...... Billy Joel's ex-wife Christie Brinkley was spotted chatting with Stormy Daniels' lawyer Michael Avenatti at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor, N.Y., on May 13. Avenatti later said that he and Christie are friends: "She's a classy, smart woman with great insight." - TMZ.com, 5/14/18...... Margot KidderActress Margot Kidder, perhaps best known for her role as Lois Lane on 1978's Superman - The Movie and three Superman sequels, died on May 13 at her home in Livingston, Montana, of as yet undisclosed causes. She was 69. Kidder also starred opposite leading men including Robert Redford in The Great Waldo Pepper and Richard Pryor in Some Kind of Hero. She even appeared in Superman-inspired television series Smallville in 2004 (though as another character). Superman director Richard Donner said he cast Kidder after seeing her on the James Garner western series Nichols, which she appeared in from 1971-72. "She was charming and very funny. When I met her in the casting office, she tripped coming in and I just fell in love with her. It was perfect, this clumsy [behavior]," said in 2016. The Canadian-born actress acquired American citizenship in 2005, and became a political and women's rights activist alongside her acting. "Thank you for being the Lois Lane so many of us grew up with. RIP, Margot Kidder," the official DC Comics Twitter account posted on May 14. - The Hollywood Reporter, 5/14/18...... Acclaimed author Tom Wolfe, who chronicled everything from hippies to the space race before turning his sharp eye to fiction, died on May 15 in a New York City hospital. He was 87. Mr. Wolfe's "new journalism" writing style was rife with exclamation points, italics and improbable words, and among his acclaimed books were The Right Stuff and The Bonfire of the Vanities, a satire of Manhattan-style power and justice that became one of the best-selling books of the 1980s. Mr. Wolfe, known for his signature three-piece white suits, was also an unlikely interloper into the heady LSD parties hosted by Ken Kesey and the Grateful Dead in the mid-1960s. Mr. Wolfe's 1979 book The Right Stuff, about the personal lives of Apollo astronauts, was turned into a hit 1983 movie of the same name starring Fred Ward, Ed Harris, Scott Glenn, Lance Henriksen, Sam Shepard, Dennnis Quaid and Barbara Hershey. - AP, 5/15/18...... Glenn Frey died in 2016 at the age of 67, and his 24-year-old son, Deacon Frey, has been performing with the Eagles in his father's shoes, and his daughter, Taylor Frey, serves as road manager on the Eagles tour, which started up again on May 9 in Vancouver. - AP, 5/10/18...... It will also be available to download seven days after its debut, though it's unclear if or when the album will be shared with non-Tidal streaming services. An agreement between Prince's estate and Tidal was approved in probate court on May 9, which effectively ended a copyright dispute between the two parties over the streaming service's prior claim to streaming rights of Prince's catalog. The two parties entered into an exclusive agreement before Prince's death in April 2016 that gave Tidal the right to stream Prince's HITnRUN albums, although Tidal claimed it had an arrangement giving it exclusive rights to the artist's entire catalog. - Billboard, 5/11/18...... Neil Young has announced he's planning to produce and release a 35-minute film he conceived to go along with his 1982 album Trans some 16 years after it was first conceived. Young says the film was never actually created because his then record company Geffen "pulled the funding for the videos because they didn't like the record," which featured him singing through a vocoder over stiff synth grooves and earned him a lawsuit from the record company. Young says the backstory of Trans is poignant: he created it as a statement about the difficulty of communicating with his son Ben, who was born with cerebral palsy and unable to speak. (Hence the chilly, difficult-to-understand vocals.) The planned film would elucidate this concept more explicitly, featuring "electronic-voice people who were working in a hospital, and the one thing they were trying to do is teach this little baby to push a button," according to the Neil Young bio Shakey. Young also says he plans on releasing "four or five" previously unheard collaborations with his band Crazy Horse via his Neil Young Archives digital library project. - Spin.com/Yahoo News, 5/8/18...... "We did the impossible: We made New Jersey hip," said Van Zandt, who is from Middletown, NJ. Other performers getting the nod included Blondie lead singer Debbie Harry, of Hawthorne, NJ. Disco queen Gloria Gaynor, who is from Newark, turned the hall into a giant dance party as audience members leapt from their seats and boogied to her hit "I Will Survive." Frankie Valli, who also is from Newark, and his Four Seasons bandmates Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, Nick Massi and Joe Long, also were inducted. Bruce Springsteen himself was admitted into the NJHOF a decade earlier. - AP, 5/7/18...... London's AIR Studios, one of the world's largest and most prestigious recording facilities, has been put up for sale by its owners. The facility's cavernous hexagonal shaped live room is big enough to house a full symphony orchestra and choir simultaneously, which has also made AIR an in-demand booking for film composers and Hollywood studios. Film scores for Darkest Hour, Dunkirk, Wonder Woman, Justice League and Alien Covenant are among recent projects recorded at the state-of-the-art studio, based at Lyndhurst Hall, a Grade II listed converted church in Hampstead, North London, since 1991. As director Baz Luhrmann was making his 2022 Elvis Presley biopic Elvis, the filmmaker and his team found a treasure trove of long-hidden film negatives and footage in the Warner Brothers vault from the previous Elvis '70s documentaries That's The Way It Is and Elvis On Tour, in addition to never-before-seen 8mm footage and never-before-heard audio of Elvis musing about his life. This inspired Luhrmann to make another Presley film, EPiC: Elvis Presley Live in Concert, which will have its global theatrical release on Feb. 27, with a one-week exclusive IMAX run a week earlier on Feb. 20. The soundtrack to EPic, featuring 27 of the Elvis songs heard in the film alongside new remixes and medleys of classic songs from Presley, will also drop on Feb. 20. Luhrmann's 2022 Elvis grossed more than $288 million worldwide and is No. 2 on Billboard's list of the highest-grossing music biopics of all-time. In addition to the soundtrack's release on digital and CD on Feb. 20, a 2-LP vinyl version of EPiC will follow on Apr. 24. "Wearin' That Night Life Look," one of the songs from the soundtrack, can be streamed on YouTube. - Billboard, 1/8/26...... Neil YoungNeil Young has kicked off 2026 with a scorching editorial of his longtime nemesis, Pres. Donald Trump. Posting on his Neil Young Archives, Young wrote: "Wake up, people! Today the USA is a disaster. Donald Trump is destroying America bit by bit with his staff of wannabes, people with no experience or talent, closet alcoholic wife beaters, inexperienced leaders who only know how to lie to keep favor with Trump's falseness so they can hold their unearned positions in his inept government, a Congress full of Republicans acting like idiots with no conscience. He has divided us. How did we elect these creeps who have no spin, no values, no conscience, no way to save the USA." The editorial hit days after 37-year-old protester Rennee Nicole Good was shot and killed by an ICE officer in Minneapolis, sparking protests in cities all over the US. "We need to take Trump at his word," Young wrote. "Make America Great Again. It won't be easy while he is trying to turn our cities into battlegrounds so he can cancel our elections with marshal law and escape all accountability. Something has to change this. We know what to do. Rise up. Peacefully in millions. Too many innocence people are dying." Young concluded with a sharp barb at the ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agency: "No soldiers in the streets before Trump. Every move he makes is to build instability so he can stay in power. He knows nothing about love. He does not know you are. Use your love of life, your love of one another, your love of children and theirs and ours. Peacefully. Now." Young and his Chrome Hearts band have announced they'll kick off a 2026 European tour on June 19 in Manchester, England. No firm US dates have been announced as yet, but Young recently told a fan they do plan on playing at least some American shows this year. "There will be some dates," he wrote. "Not a lot." - RollingStone.com, 1/9/26...... Long before he became David Bowie, a young David Jones lived at a modest traditional British home in Brixton, southeast London that had a living and dining room/kitchen downstairs, and two bedrooms upstairs. That fabled house, 4 Plaistow Grove in Bromley, is now set to be a place of pilgrimage for Bowie fans when it is restored and reopened to the public in the coming years. The announcement of the heritage project comes on what would have been Bowie's 79th birthday (Jan. 8), and just days before the 10th anniversary of his Jan. 10, 2016, passing. Bowie moved to the property with his mother and father in 1955 and lived there until 1967, around the time that he released his self-titled debut album on Decca Records, though he returned often in the following years. Geoffrey Marsh, who co-curated the acclaimed David Bowie Is exhibition that toured the world, will assist in restoring 4 Plaistow Grove alongside a never-before-seen archive. The site will also host creative and skills workshops for young people, with the trust saying that the house will act as a "solid foundation for the next generation" and will focus on teaching confidence and communication skills in the arts. The Jones Day Foundation, a charitable foundation funded by attorneys and staff of the Jones Day law firm, will contribute £500,000 ($672,024) toward the restoration. A public fundraising campaign will be launched later in January for additional funds. Bowie is not the first British star to have their childhood home enshrined. Paul McCartney and John Lennon's childhood homes in Liverpool are owned by the UK National Trust and open to visitors. In other Bowie news, the Thin White Duke's 1977 classic "Heroes" is seeing a major resurgence on streaming platforms following its prominent placement in the finale of Netflix's Stranger Things, which premiered Dec. 31. On the day of the finale and the three days since (Dec. 31-Jan. 3), "Heroes" accumulated 1.4 million official on-demand U.S. streams, a 143% jump over the previous period of Dec. 27-30 (613,000), according to Luminate. The placement marked a full-circle moment for the series, which has become closely associated with 1980s music throughout its run. - Billboard, 1/8/26...... The DoorsFifty-five years after The Doors released their 1971 classic "Riders on the Storm," surviving Doors John Densmore and Robby Krieger have reunited to re-create the song with musicians from across the globe as part of Playing for Change's annual Songs Around the World project. Contributing musicians include Don Was, Rami Jaffee, Sierra Ferrell, Aaron White, Micah Nelson, and Micah's brother Lukas Nelson. "Vocally, Lukas Nelson filled Jim Morrison's leather pants quite well!" Densmore says in a statement. "Ray would be proud of the way Rami Jaffee 'channeled' the piano solo. Mark Johnson masterminded a beautiful video." Adds Krieger: "Seeing musicians from different cultures come together around this song means a lot. Playing for Change is doing important work to unite people across the globe." Over the past two decades, Playing for Change has teamed up such rock icons as Keith Richards, Robbie Robertson, Bono, Buddy Guy, David Crosby, Steve Miller, Tom Morello, Ringo Starr, Bunny Wailer, and many others, racking up over 2 billion YouTube views. Songs to get the Playing for Change treatment have included "Fly Like an Eagle," "The Weight," "No Woman No Cry," "Peace Train," and "When the Levee Breaks." The Doors, meanwhile, spent the past year celebrating the group's 60th anniversary. Densmore is largely retired from the road, but Krieger continues to keep the band's music alive on concert stages, and has announced a special 80th birthday gig at the Whisky a Go Go in Los Angeles on Mar. 28. The new "Riders on the Storm" video has been shared on YouTube. - RollingStone.com, 1/9/26...... Taking to his YouTube channel in early January, Ronnie Wood shared some insight into his early years in the music industry, and explained how he first began working with Jeff Beck back in 1967 -- a period when the guitarist left The Yardbirds and formed the Jeff Beck Group. It was after a show at the historic 100 Club in London, the 78-year-old musician explained, when Beck came up to him and asked if he'd "consider playing bass." Responding, Wood said that he told Beck: "'I love a challenge. I don't mind it' So that's when I went on to the bass." Continuing to perform with Beck's band in the following years, Wood then went on to say that when he played in America it was none other than Jimi Hendrix who became a fan, and would frequently attend their shows and share praise for Wood's abilities. "Jimi Hendrix used to come and jam with us. He used to say to Jeff, 'Hey, Jeff, let the bass player have a solo,'" he continued on the video. "He loved my bass playing, and so that was a feather in my cap." That period of the '60s, he added, led to him and Hendrix "sharing a flat with him in Holland Park for a couple of weeks" while both tried to get more live shows lined up. "It was great fun," he added. By the end of the decade, Wood would go on to play in The Faces alongside Rod Stewart, and then eventually joined The Rolling Stones in 1975 -- replacing Mick Taylor and staying in the line-up for over five decades. Their latest album, the Grammy-winning 24th studio LP Hackney Diamonds was released in 2023 and marked their first since the death of drummer Charlie Watts. Wood has said that a new Stones album will be released in 2026, however it has also been confirmed that the band will not be touring this year. - NME, 1/7/26...... It was hailed, sadly by many, as the end of an era when MTV recently announced it was closing down a lot of its 24-hour music-only channels -- including five in the UK -- on Dec. 31. Now someone on Reddit has announced on the site that an online alternative has been created. Called MTV Rewind, the site plays music videos all day without any modern ads (though you might see a few vintage commercials thrown in) or reality TV shows. It hosts a staggering 27,000+ music videos from the 1970s onwards, and visitors can filter by decade, step back in time with Yo! MTV Raps or Headbangers Ball, or simply shuffle the vast archive and leave it to fate. As it says on the site, "No ads, no algorithm, no login, just pure random discovery. Pick a decade. Press play. Let the chaos begin." MTV first launched in the US in 1981, and the first video to play on the channel was "Video Killed The Radio Star" by The Buggles. A European version arrived in 1987, opening with Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing," and a dedicated UK channel came ten years later. - NME, 1/6/26...... ZZ TopZZ Top, famed for their elaborate facial hair over the years (ironically barring clean shaven drummer Frank Beard), have been rumored for many years to have turned down a hefty sum of money to shave off their distinctive beards. Now in a new interview, ZZ Top frontman Billy Gibbons has confirmed that it's true. Speaking during a recent appearance on the Mohr Stories podcast, Gibbons shared that each bandmember was offered $1 million back in the 1980s by razor company Gilette, and in exchange, they had to get rid of the facial hair on television. "They deny it," the "La Grange" singer said of Gillette. "[But] it was a million dollars per man." He also said that he called up his publicist, Bob Merlis, after hearing about the offer, who gave a witty response in return. "'The money's good, you might as well consider doing it but I'm not so sure any of you guys know what's under there'," Gibbons said. The hirsute look of the "lil' ol band from Texas" goes back to their early days, when they started the band at the end of the '60s, and toured extensively up until the mid-'70s. When asked in 2025 why they first grew out the beards, Gibbons told The Big Interview that it was because of "one word: lazy." "We started ZZ Top in 1969. We carried on non-stop until the bicentennial year of '76," he said. "And at that time, we were looking at an invitation to join the ranks of the Warner Bros. Group." He then added that he and bassist Dusty Hill began growing out the beards "as a disguise" initially, but then realized it had "turned into a trademark." After wrapping a run of live shows in 2025, the trio will be performing live again later this year, with a huge run of US live shows scheduled between March and May, and a run of live shows and festival appearances planned for Europe later in the summer. Last year, the band issued a statement to say that Beard would "temporarily" be stepping away from live shows as he had to "attend to a health issue requiring his focus in the near term." ZZ Top's longtime tech member John Douglas stepped in to perform at the shows in his place. - NME, 1/7/26...... Pink Floyd's iconic 1973 No. 1 album The Dark Side of the Moon is nearing its milestone 1,000th week on the Billboard Hot 200 album chart, nabbing its 996th nonconsecutive week on the list on the chart dated Jan. 10. Those 996 nonconsecutive weeks would be the equivalent of more than 229 months, or more than a whopping 19 years, in total. The Billboard Hot 200 began publishing on a regular weekly basis in March of 1956. The Dark Side of the Moon became the longest-charted album in the history of the list in 1983 and has held the title ever since. The Dark Side of the Moon was released in March 1973, hit No. 1 for one week that April, and contains the band's first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, "Money," which reached No. 13. Dark Side became the longest-charted album on the Billboard 200 on the chart dated Oct. 29, 1983. That week, it captured its 491st week on the list, surpassing Johnny Mathis' long-standing record of 490 weeks with Johnny's Greatest Hits. - Billboard, 1/7/26...... John Paul JonesLed Zeppelin's John Paul Jones has announced he is auctioning off a range of studio equipment, and it includes an amp that was blown after being left at Dave Grohl's house. The auction is being organized by a UK company called Soundgas, which specializes in the sale of vintage and rare recording equipment and instruments. According to a description, the Zeppelin legend is wanting to sell much of his gear because, while he "is still very active musically -- writing, recording and performing," he "but no longer requires so much studio equipment." It goes on to state that Jones has owned most of the items going to sale since they were brand new, and is letting go of them as "he feels it should be in the hands of people who will put it to good use." "It is offered here without formal provenance, with the intention that it continues to be used as intended," the description reads. Among the items up for grabs is a a rare Simmons SDS V electronic drum kit, a pair of AKAI digital samplers, a pair of Yamaha NS-10M speakers, and a sought-after Arbiter Soundimension mechanical echo unit that dates back to the '60s. One eye-catching item listed is also a Guild Thunderbass amplifier, which was used by the iconic bassist during his time with the supergroup, Them Crooked Vultures. The band comprised Jones, Foo Fighters' frontman Grohl and Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, and a description for the amp says it was left at Grohl's house where it went out on a loan, and returned to Jones with the speakers blown. Despite it being worse for wear, the amp -- which is currently untested -- is predicted to sell for roughly £1,300. Soundgas has clarified that the items going to auction are from the artist's own private studio and were not used with Led Zeppelin. Meanwhile, Jones has written a 20-minute composition for mezzo-soprano Dame Sarah Connolly, which was performed for the first time on Jan. 7 at London's Wigmore Hall. - NME, 1/6/26..... Former KISS drummer Peter Criss has said him beating cancer was a "miracle." Speaking to the KISS FAQ podcast, Criss reflected on this difficult period of his life. "I had breast cancer a while back, and I prayed. I'm a very religious guy, so I really prayed very, very hard," he remembered. "I was at church probably more than the pastor, and I really prayed hard. And God gave me my miracle. And I felt, and I kid you not, that I really could walk on water." The 80-year-old musician, who released his first solo album in 18 years in December, revealed that he wrote his new track "Walking On Water" about his cancer journey. "Have you ever watched that Being There movie with Chauncey Gardiner?" he asked. "And at the end he walks on water, and you realise he's an angel. I love that movie. And I felt like that. "I felt like I could walk on the ocean, and it was such a high. I was so elated that I was cured. And so I wanted to write a religious song, and I wanted to write about the experience that I was feeling inside, 'cause I always sing from the heart." He continued: "Everything comes from my heart. And that's one of my favourite songs. I'm glad you brought it up, because 'Walking On Water' is special." The drummer/vocalist also vowed to "never stop" making music "until they put me in the box," adding: "Music is a gift from God." - NME, 1/6/26...... Eric Clapton has become a grandfather for the third time, as his daughter, Ruth Clapton, welcomed a baby girl with her partner, Peter Greenwood, on Jan. 6. Taking to her Instagram to share the exciting news, Ruth posted an adorable picture of the little girl wrapped up in a cardigan and lilac hat. "Cecelia Rose Clapton-Greenwood. Born 6th Jan 9.21am," she penned. Ruth is already mum to two sons, aged 12 and nine, with her ex-husband Dean Bartlett, from whom she split in 2020. She went on to find love with British musician Greenwood in Aug. 2023. Clapton secretly fathered Ruth during an affair with studio manager Yvonne Kelly, while he was married to model Pattie Boyd. Her existence was kept secret from the public until 1991, when she attended the funeral of Clapton's four-year-old son, Conor, who fell to his death from a window of a New York skyscraper. In an interview for his MTV special the year after Conor's tragic death, Clapton acknowledged Ruth, saying, "Ruth has been a tremendous support." - Music-News.com, 1/9/26...... Ted NugentTed Nugent has kicked off the new year slamming his fellow Detroit musicians Tom Morello and Jack White. The comments came during one of Nugent Let's Talk Music podcasts on New Year's Day (Jan. 1), during which the MAGA rocker appeared to go blank on the name of the "guy in The White Stripes," while referencing Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and fellow Detroit native Jack White. Unlike Nugent, a vocal supporter of Pres. Donald Trump, White has been a loud and proud enemy of the White House, repeatedly lambasting Trump for everything from his "vile," hate-filled post about the recent murder of beloved filmmaker Rob Reiner to mocking the president's gaudy, gold-plated White House makeover. "Jack White, is that his name? Jack White. No, I think The White Stripes, is that his name?," Nugent said, acting as if he was unaware of the name of one of the city's biggest modern rock icons, and giving him a "four or five" rating on a scale of 10. Nugent had some shade for his old pal Tom Morello as well, whose name he also seemed to fumble over. "Tom Morello, Is that his name? Tom Morel?," Nugent said of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member. "Who played with [Bruce] Springsteen and Rage Against the Machine, when actually they are the machine. Come on Tom, you got to know that. You're not raging against the machine. You are the machine." - Billboard, 1/5/26..... Celebrity author Michael Schumacher, who wrote biographies of Francis Ford Coppola and Eric Clapton, died of as yet unnanounced causes on Dec. 29. In a new interview with the UK paper The Sun, producer Giles Martin says no more "secret" Beatles tracks will ever be released. "I don't think there's anything. I always say that then something turns up. But I don't think there's anything," he said, adding how it's "incredible how much interest there still is over Beatles stuff." "You do [hear new] things on this Anthology box set," he said. "There's that first round of Helter Skelter, which for me is great because it's really raw. It's proper in your face music. And then people go, 'Well, how come we haven't released the 20-minute long version of Helter Skelter?' I think we're done." Giles' father, Sir George Martin -- who died in 2016 -- was known as "the fifth Beatle" for his work with the band and Giles said he's enjoyed going through his father's work. "Their music and what they did really makes people feel better about themselves. So to work on this material and to be close to my dad is a great thing." Giles curated the new Anthology 4 album and remastered the entire collection for the 2025 re-release of the Beatles' Anthology series. He is also working with director Sam Mendes on the four upcoming Beatles biopics, which will each focus on a different member of the band. - Music-News.com, 1/3/26...... Alex Van HalenCo-founding Van Halen drummer Alex Van Halen has revealed that he is working on a new album with Toto guitarist Steve Lukather. "I'm getting ready to do this record with Lukather and a couple of other people," Alex said on the Metal Sticks podcast hosted by Iron Maiden's Nick McBrain. "It should be exciting." Van Halen did not elaborate whether the new project will be a VH album proper or a side project. VH's last studio effort was 2012's A Different Kind of Truth, and have been inactive since Eddie Van Halen's death from complications from throat cancer in 2020 at the age of 65. Reports of a potential Van Halen/Lukather collaboration first surfaced in 2025, with Alex saying: "[Eddie] and Steve Lukather were very good friends and they often worked together. There is no one who can do this process with me as well as he can." Alex has said in the past that there are "three or four" more VH records to be made from the music that is saved in the band's vault: "There was some good stuff in there. And you have to remember, when in the thick of it, sometimes the really great stuff kind of passes you by. And it's not until you revisit it going, 'Whoa, I forgot about that. This kicks ass.' But that takes time. And you wanna do it right. I wanna do it right." Alex's most recent projects include the release of the full six-minute version of "Unfinished," the final song he wrote with Eddie, in 2024 as part of the release of the audiobook of his memoir Brothers. - New Musical Express, 1/4/26...... Barry Manilow's legion of fans received some good news on Jan. 2 when the "Copacabana" hitmaker shared a positive update of his recent health struggle on Instagram, posting a grinning selfie that appears to have been taken in a hospital bed while wearing a gown. The photo, seemingly sent through text, shows a gray message bubble that reads, "Better today!" In late December, Manilow announced his cancer diagnosis in a statement on his social media accounts, sharing how he recently went through six weeks of bronchitis followed by a relapse of another five weeks. "Even though I was over the bronchitis and back on stage at the Westgate Las Vegas, my wonderful doctor ordered an MRI just to make sure that everything was OK," he wrote. "The MRI discovered a cancerous spot on my left lung that needs to be removed. It's pure luck (and a great doctor) that it was found so early. That's the good news." He added that he would be undergoing surgery to have the cancer removed. "The doctors do not believe it has spread and I'm taking tests to confirm their diagnosis," Manilow wrote. "So, that's it. No chemo. No radiation. Just chicken soup and I Love Lucy reruns." Manilow also apologized to fans for postponing his January shows, and said he was "counting the days" until he can return to his residency at the Westgate Las Vegas "for Valentine's weekend concerts on Feb. 12-13-14 and throughout 2026." - Billboard, 1/3/26...... Billy JoelBilly Joel surprised fans in Florida on Jan. 2 by delivering his first performance since revealing in May 2025 that he has normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a type of brain disorder. Joel, 76, joined the Billy Joel tribute band Turnstiles at a village amphitheater in Wellington, Fla., which was celebrating its 30th anniversary, and teased throughout the show that a "special guest" would appear. The Piano Man joined Turnstiles onstage accompanied by his wife, Alexis Roderick, and their two daughters, Della and Remy. After asking for permission to use the microphone, Joel performed "We Didn't Start the Fire" and "Big Shot," while his daughters danced beside him. Following his NPH announcement, Joel canceled all scheduled concerts to begin physical therapy to manage his symptoms, performing his last full concert in Feb. 2025. NPH occurs when cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the skull and puts pressure on the brain, according to the Cleveland Clinic. The condition can affect thinking, memory, balance and movement, and is often treated with a surgically implanted shunt to drain excess fluid. In July 2025, Billy appeared on Bill Maher's Club Random podcast, telling the comedian he was feeling okay but noted that his condition was ongoing. "It's not fixed... it's still being worked on," he said. "My balance sucks. It's like being on a boat. [My condition] used to be called 'water on the brain.' Now it's called normal pressure hydrocephalus." Fan-captured footage of Joel's performance can be streamed on YouTube. - Billboard, 1/3/26...... Slightly more than five months after the death of his Black Sabbath bandmate Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi has revealed that he will "definitely" release a solo album in 2026. In his traditional New Year's Eve video uploaded to his official YouTube channel, Iommi revealed that as part of his plans for the year ahead, he intends to release the follow-up to his last solo record, 2005's Fused. "There's a Gibson documentary coming out very, very soon," he said. "And then, of course, in 2026, I shall have, definitely, definitely, my solo album out. I'm really looking forward to that. I'm enjoying doing it. It's been great fun, and I really, really hope you enjoy it, but I'll keep you more up to date as we go on with what's happening with that, and when it's going to be released." Iommi also reflected on the historic final Sabbath show "Back To The Beginning." "The amount of bands that turned up to support Sabbath at that was just fantastic," he said. "What a great event. And, of course, it raised a lot of money for charity." He also acknowledged the death of Ozzy just weeks after the show. "It's just unfortunate and sad that Ozzy passed away a couple of weeks after that," he said. "May he rest in peace." - NME, 1/3/26...... The end of an era for music videos ended on Dec. 31 when cable TV's MTV channel closed down their remaining dedicated music video channels, ending with the Buggles "Video Killed The Radio Star." The network closed its final 24-hour music video stations across the UK, with MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV and MTV Live all being removed from platforms like Sky and Virgin Media. The flagship MTV channel will remain active in the UK, and it is expected to continue to primarily broadcast reality series. The flagship MTV channel will remain active in the UK, and it is expected to continue to primarily broadcast reality series. As a sign-off, they played the video for 1979 new wave classic by the Buggles, a symbolic choice at it was also the first video that MTV ever aired when it launched in the US in 1981. MTV's parent company, Paramount Skydance, has also shuttered the same channels in Ireland, Germany, Austria, Poland, France, Hungry, Australia and Brazil. After the launch of MTV in 1981, its counterpart channel MTV Europe followed in 1987 -- opening with Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing" -- and MTV UK arrived in 1997. That channel stopped showing music videos in 2011. MTV quickly became a staple of pop culture after its launch, and was tied to countless historic moments in music, including the world premiere of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video and the 16-hour broadcast of the Live Aid concerts in 1985. There has been a marked shift in viewing habits since the channels' heyday, with music videos now more commonly consumed on YouTube and social media rather than television. When Paramount Global merged with Skydance Media in an $8 billion deal in Aug. 2025, CEO David Ellison was said to be eager to cut costs, but was considering ways to revitalize MTV, and there has been speculation that there have been discussions about turning it into an online streaming service to rival YouTube and Spotify. - NME, 1/1/26...... Stevie WonderStevie Wonder's 1972 hit "Superstition" has been voted the Ultimate Stevie Wonder Song in a poll conducted by BBC Radio 2. A massive audience vote saw fans choose "Superstition" from a shortlist of his 60 most-played solo tracks. The results were revealed by legendary UK broadcaster Trevor Nelson during a special New Year's Day countdown, celebrating 50 years since the release of Wonder's landmark 1976 album Songs in the Key of Life. Released in 1972 on the album Talking Book, "Superstition" remains a cultural phenomenon. Noted for its iconic Hohner Clavinet opening, the track earned Wonder Grammy Awards for Best Rhythm & Blues Song and Best R&B Vocal Performance. It was his second US number one, arriving a decade after he first topped the charts as a 13-year-old with "Fingertips, Pt 2." "It's a stone-cold classic and a guaranteed floor-filler," said Nelson. "It has one of the best intros to a song ever made. The Radio 2 listeners have spoken, and it's hard to disagree with them." Rounding out the Top 10 of Wonder hits chosen by fans was "Sir Duke," "For Once In My Life," "As," "Isn't She Lovely," "You Are The Sunshine of My Life," "Master Blaster (Jammin')," "Living For The City," "I Just Called To Say I Love You" and "Lately." - Music-News.com, 1/3/25......Glenn Tilbrook, co-founder of the '70s new wave band Squeeze along with Chris Difford, has revealed that he and Difford aren't friends. Speaking the Britain's MOJO magazine, Tilbrook said although he and Difford still perform and make music together, they are no longer as close as they used to be and don't have a relationship outside of the band. "Mine and Chris' relationship effectively ended as a friendship in, I'd say, 1976," Tilbrook said. "But as a band, we could still carry on and be productive. I think Chris and Jools [Holland] were far closer than Chris and I were." "During that time, I began to feel the pull of Chris wanting to be doing something different to what we were doing. And that was a bit weird for me," he noted. Even after Squeeze split for the first time in 1982, Chris and Glenn recorded their Difford + Tilbrook album together in 1984, but were barely on speaking terms. Tilbrook admitted: "Difford + Tilbrook was a very difficult period where we didn't talk to each other for a year, but we were making a record and it was crazily difficult to understand anything. Chris was really horrible to be around at that point. OK, he may well say the same thing about me, I don't know, but the degree of any trust that we could have in each other was completely gone by then." - Music-News, 1/1/26.
