CherCher has become the popular social media site TikTok's latest celebrity user, introducing herself to TikTok users on June 23 with a variety of messages while donning an assortment of color wigs. "Hi, it's me, the great and powerful Cher. And I'm on TikTok," a blonde-haired Cher wearing a white fur-lined jacket and black pants posted in her first take. The diva then sported a brunette wig and black-and-white striped jacket for the message, "Hi, it's me, Cher, on TikTok." Cher then became a blonde again for her third take, "Guess who I am? I'm on TikTok," before her final take in which she wore the brunette wig." "Hi, of course you know who I am. I was gonna introduce myself, but no," she says, before sharing a PSA for Gay Pride Month. "Happy Pride Month to everybody in the community that I love, and that means you," she said. Meanwhile, in an interview with the Just for Variety podcast on June 23, Cher revealed she's keen on casting an unknown actress to play herself in a planned Cher biopic. "We (she and the film's producers) were talking about it yesterday, and we're just trying to think of (actors). I said, 'I don't think we know her yet,'" Cher noted. The "Believe" singer announced plans to turn her life story into a major movie project as she celebrated her 75th birthday in May, and although the casting process has yet to begin. Universal Pictures execs have recruited Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth to pen the script for the biopic, which will be produced by Judy Craymer -- the brains behind the ABBA musical and movie "Mamma Mia!" -- and Gary Goetzman. Cher has a working relationship with each of the creatives involved -- she previously starred in Roth's film Suspect, and featured in Craymer and Goetzman's 2018 Mamma Mia! film sequel. However, Cher says she has no idea how much of a say she'll actually have in the finished product. "I know the people so I'm sure they'll... listen to things I have to say. But it doesn't mean I'm going to get the final cut," she insisted. A projected release date for the biopic has yet to be set. - New Musical Express/Music-News.com, 6/25/21...... "Not seeing your face I miss being close/ But it's your touch, babe I miss the most/ Feeling the distance In our sacred space/ Baby never thought we'd be We'd be in this place," frontman Pineda sings over the mid-tempo track before bursting into the urgent chorus, "Can we ever get back?/ To the way we were doing it/ To the way we were livin' it/ Back to the way we used to be." In an interview with Gary Kemp and Guy Pratt's Rockonteurs podcast, founding Fleetwood Mac drummer Mick Fleetwood said he's eager to get back on stage with former Mac member Lindsey Buckingham before they "knock it all on the head." "The thought of walking on stage and Lindsey being part of that would be very healing," the 73-year-old drummer said. "That's not saying goodbye to [new Fleetwood Mac members] Mike [Campbell] or Neil [Finn], we don't behave like that, but something connective. "I believe that me and Lindsey will make some music together like he did with Christine [McVie], and I would love that, no matter what unbridged feels there are that aren't healed for all their own personal reasons. I would hope to be the instigator of making all that happen before we knock it all on the head." Fleetwood's comments come after he revealed earlier this year he has reconciled with his former bandmate, who was fired by the band in 2018 when Mick insisted the guitarist would never be allowed to rejoin the band. Admitting the pair had put the past behind them, Mick said: "I've really enjoyed being re-connected with Lindsey, which has been gracious and open. And both of us have been beautifully honest about who we are and how we got to where we were." - Music-News.com, 6/23/21...... In other Beatles-related news, Ringo Starr has dropped his legal battle against the makers of a sex toy called "Ring O." The famous drummer had challenged the toy's trademark and argued the similarity to his name could cause confusion, arguing that his reputation could be damaged if the name was registered as a US trademark. Starr has now withdrawn the complaint after an agreement was reached with Ring O manufacturers. His lawyers initially argued that the brand was "identical in appearance, sound, connotation and pronunciation" to his own name, which he had previously trademarked. Documents filed by his legal team in 2019 said: "Consumers will likely believe that Opposer's [Starr's] newest venture is sex toys -- and this is an association that Opposer does not want." Having argued that the connection would tarnish his "name, likeness and brand," a new settlement has now seen Pacific Holdings and Momentum Management agree to "avoid any activity likely to lead to confusion" between their product and Starr. The deal states that the firms can only use the name for adult sex toys and sprays, and there must be a space between the "Ring" and "O." They have also promised not to "degrade, tarnish or deprecate or disparage" Starr's name or image and confirmed they will avoid making any reference or innuendo to associate the product with him. Starr is yet to directly comment on the settlement. - NME, 6/25/21...... A previously unreleased Johnny Cash live album that was recorded in 1968 by the late Owsley Stanley at the Carousel Ballroom in San Francisco on Apr. 24, 1968, Bear's Sonic Journals: Johnny Cash At The Carousel Ballroom, April 24 1968 is set for release on Sept. 24 via the Owsley Stanley Foundation and Renew Records/BMG, and is the latest entry in the Owsley Stanley Foundation's Bear's Sonic Journals series. Bob DylanSony Entertainment has announced a new Bob Dylan compilation film of promotional material, footage from other documentaries left on the cutting-room floor and assorted demos and alternate takes from the singer-songwriter's six-decade career. Dubbed Odds and Ends, the roughly two-hour compilation is being distributed as a digital download or rental beginning June 22, and focuses primarily on Dylan's first two decades with Sony-owned Columbia Records, a label he has called home since 1961, save for a brief detour with Asylum Records in 1973. Odds and Ends will showcase a mix of material previously released piecemeal, with interviews ranging from the likes of Dylan's first manager Roy Silver lamenting about how the pop/rock legend got away, to John Hammond in an in-house sales video for Blood on the Tracks (1974) boasting about how Dylan recorded the acclaimed rock masterpiece in a mere five days, and mixed it in two. Dylan completists have seen much of this material in other forms but for the less indoctrinated, there are nuggets to be mined, such as from Paris in 1966 when Dylan faces a hostile audience that feels he's betrayed his folk roots by going electric, spending an inordinate amount of time tuning his guitar during the acoustic half of the show. - The Hollywood Reporter, 6/22/21...... In other Dylan-related news, the Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde has announced a UK tour where she will sing songs from Dylan's extensive back catalogue, as well as some other favourites. The album is scheduled to drop in the US on Aug. 20. Hynde's UK tour will be spread across July and August, kicking off at the Royal Opera House in London on July 29 and July 30, and include her first-ever appearance at the Queen's Hall in Edinburgh, over four nights from Aug. 22-25. - NME, 6/22/21...... Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine, the daughter of Don McLean has accused her father of mentally and emotionally abusing her -- allegations that he has denied. Jackie McLean, who is also the frontwoman of the indie rock duo Roan Yellowthorn, claims her singer/songwriter dad was abusive throughout her childhood. In one example, she accuses Don of verbally abusing her after he couldn't find something in the house. At no point does Jackie accuse Don of physical abuse. "My dad couldn't find a key to a piece of furniture and he thought that I hid it and he was just screaming in my face," she said. "I couldn't leave, I couldn't move, I couldn't say anything. I didn't know where the key was and I was just trapped in that moment having to endure the fear and the trauma until it ended. That was just a normal kind of thing that there would be screaming and yelling." As she got older, Jackie said Don fostered a "strong culture of misogyny" within the home, commenting on women's appearances on the TV, and also allegedly make indirect remarks about her voice, which initially discouraged her from pursuing a music career. "Every stage of my development was met with some level of trauma," she said. "When I started shaving my legs, he got mad at me 'cause he noticed the razor in my room... When I got my first bra, he got mad about it." Don McLean has denied all claims of emotional and mental abuse when asked to respond to Jackie's comments. Having grown up in a physically abusive household himself, the "American Pie"singer said he would never do that to a child or partner, though he admitted that he "did have a temper." "I don't understand what mental and emotional abuse is," he said. "There would never be any paralyzing attacks 'cause her mother was always around. I would never attack her anyway; I would never attack anybody," he said. "If I yelled at you for five minutes you'd think I yelled at you for an hour because it's shocking. I would snap sometimes; I did have a temper." - NME, 6/24/21...... A forgotten David Bowie of the '70s, Just a Gigolo, is finally being released on DVD and Blu-ray this summer. The 1978 film was directed by David Hemmings, and has now been digitally remastered for release alongside a 54-page booklet and other bonus features. A synopsis for Just a Gigolo reads: "Paul von Przygodski (David Bowie), a young Prussian gentleman, arrives in the trenches in time to be caught in the final explosion of the Great War. After recuperating in a military hospital, where he is mistaken for a French hero, he returns to Berlin. His family home has been turned into a boarding house, his father (Rudolf Schndler) is paralysed, and his mother (Maria Schell) is working in the Turkish baths. "Attempting to find a new purpose, his childhood friend, Cilly (Sydne Rome), abandons him for fame and fortune; his former commanding officer, Captain Kraft (David Hemmings), tries to persuade him to join his right-wing movement and a widow, Helga von Kaiserling (Kim Novak), briefly seduces him with the finer things in life." Bowie stars alongside Hollywood icons Novak and Marlena Dietrich in what was his first film role after Nicolas Roeg's The Man Who Fell to Earth in 1976. In other Bowie news, a new global auction record for a David Bowie work has been set at a Toronto auction. A rare Bowie painting named "D Head XLVI," found at northern Ontario donation centre that sold for just $5, went on to fetch $108,120 at an online auction on June 25 staged by Toronto fine art dealers Cowley Abbott. The painting, part of a series of about 45 works on canvas that Bowie titled "Dead Heads" or "D Heads," sold to a private collector in the U.S. for more than 10 times the low-end of the auction estimate. The sale marks a new global auction record for a Bowie work, more than doubling the 2016 sale of a "D Head" series artwork for $39,000 in the U.K. - NME/Canoe.com, 6/22/21...... I'm everything at once -- and when I hit the stage I think it'll probably be as if I never left." Daryl predicts fans will feel the same way in short order. "I actually would use the word rejoicing, like 'We're here! We're back in this again! We can do this!' I think it'll be that kind of positive feeling and ecstatic feeling. I think once it starts happening, it's gonna be great." The duo will wrap their trek with two nights at the Foxwoods venue in Mashantucket, CT, on Dec. 3 and 4. Veteran hard rockers Foreigner announced on June 17 they'll launch an ambitious 121-date 2021/2022 world tour on June 24 in Ottumwa, Iowa. After a 15-month coronavirus hiatus, the trek will take the band to 72 U.S. cities in 2021 -- including a short run of shows with orchestras during October -- with concerts in 15 more countries during 2022. Dates for the latter will be announced during November. Foreigner plans to be cautious in its return, however, with current frontman Kelly Hansen saying the band will have a "backstage bubble" that will include mask requirements and other measures to keep band and crew members safe. "We want to make sure we do the most safe and protective things we can to make sure all these shows go off and happen the way they should," says Hansen, who got married during the lockdown. He plans to eschew his usual romps into the audience during the shows for now, and the band plans to alter its usual meet and greets with fans before the concerts. "Here I Am" was co-written by Jamie Hartman and produced by Black Eyed Peas star will.i.am. "The process of creating this song was like constructing the greatest tribute I could possibly offer to her spirit," Hudson says. "It was the final exhale of this extraordinary project and one that I let out with complete fulfillment. Being able to do so with Carole and Jamie was an incredible privilege." She continued, "Carole is one of the greatest songwriters of all time, and whether we were trading stories, playing piano together over video conference, or working through lyrics, it was always a masterclass -- both in life and music." Warner Bros. announced on June 18 it has acquired the rights to the upcoming Marvin Gaye biopic What's Going On. The film, directed and co-produced by Allen Hughes (Menace II Society, Dead Presidents), is described by Hughes as a "personal" project. "When I made my first film with my brother [Albert Hughes], we were fortunate to get 'What's Going On' into the trailer for Menace II Society, and it was a game changer in elevating the marketing of that film," Allen says. "Every film of mine but the period film From Hell had some Marvin Gaye in it, and I've just always connected to him. He's the artist's artist, with this ethereal voice that just comes out of the heavens. There have been plenty of great artists, and then Marvin, in his own lane," Hughes adds. There have been many previous attempts by different filmmakers to make a Marvin Gaye biopic, but they have either stalled or fell short of the rights needed. However this time Hughes & co. have the consent of Gaye's estate as well as Motown Records so there will be rights to use all of the legendary singer's signature songs. What's Going On is described as "a musical odyssey and theatrical experience focusing on the life of one of America's greatest singers and musicians." The film, penned by poet-playwright Marcus Gardley with Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine also co-producing, will thread the story of Gaye's past with events that helped shape his infamous last tour. - New Musical Express, 6/19/21...... WOMAD is set to begin just three days later on July 22, with Anoushka Shankar, Jordan Rakei, Nitin Sawhney and The Comet Is Coming due to headline. Gabriel said that commercial insurance has risen substantially "and you can understand why." "So if we're trying to restore cultural life and normality we need a bit of help here. There's too much uncertainty for most festival promoters to take the risk," he added. The lack of festival insurance has already sparked several other festival cancellations in the UK this summer. - NME, 6/17/21...... In Canada James hooked up with Neil Young and they formed a group called the Mynah Birds but, according to the documentary, the band's manager ratted him out to the authorities for desertion and he was booted from Canada. Frank BonnerActor Frank Bonner, best known for playing the brash advertising salesman Herb Tarlek on the '70s sitcom WKRP In Cincinnati, died on June 16 at his home in Laguna Niguel, Calif., south of Los Angeles. He was 79. Bonner's daughter, Desiree Boers-Kort, said the cause was complications of Lewy body dementia, and that her father had learned he had the disease, which leads to worsening mental and physical complications, about three years ago. WKRP in Cincinnati, which ran on CBS from 1978 to 1982, was set at a struggling radio station trying to reinvent itself with a rock format. The cast included Gary Sandy as the embattled station manager and Tim Reid and Howard Hesseman as disc jockeys. Bonner's character, the station's sales manager, was known for his obnoxious behavior, his general incompetence and his garish wardrobe. Bonner played Tarlek on all four seasons of the show, and reprised the role on a sequel show a decade later. A native of Little Rock, Ark., Bonner began his Hollywood career in 1967, picking up steam in 1970 with roles in the film Equinox and on the TV series "The Young Lawyers and Nancy. He appeared on Mannix, Police Woman, Fantasy Island and other shows before landing the career-defining role of Herb Tarlek. In addition to his daughter, Bonner is survived by his wife, Gayle Hardage Bonner. Bonner's daughter said her dad got a kick out of Tarlek's wardrobe, because his style was "one of the things that people loved about him." She said he kept some of Herb's distinctive white belts when the show ended. - AP, 6/19/21.
